Adoption Stories - Adopting a child with additional health needs

Some children need extra care and support due to health conditions or additional needs. These stories highlight the experiences of adopters who have welcomed children with medical, developmental, or learning needs and how they have navigated the challenges and rewards of parenting.

"Dealing with the unknown and uncertainties for the child they adopt can be a barrier for some people. I’ve always said I would take a child with additional needs. Many people wouldn’t consider those children but I’d rather be the one who said ‘yes’." Louise and David share their story of adopting a child with additional needs.
“You get a huge amount of pleasure from seeing them hit their milestones, however small. I never thought I would hear my son say, ‘I love you’ but he did.” Here Tom and Janet share their story of adopting two children with additional health needs.
James (33) and his husband Bobby (33) felt that with James’ healthcare experience and open-minded attitude they could offer a loving home to siblings with additional health needs. This is their story.
Kate and Liz live at home with their two adopted children and dog Bob. This is their story.
"We were able to give James a secure and nurturing family, so that he could thrive and enjoy the opportunities, cuddles, love and support he deserves." Alice and Michael share their story of adopting a child with developmental delay
‘You learn a lot when you adopt. Alice and Ben learned that honesty really is the best policy’ Alice and Ben adopted James and his disabled brother Luke, when they were four and three years old respectively, and their four birth children were in their teens.
