Today’s Government apology for historical forced adoption practices marks an important moment for many people whose lives have been affected by these experiences. Between the 1940s and 1970s, many mothers were separated from their children in circumstances where they had little genuine choice, support or voice in decisions about their future. The profound loss and trauma experienced has had lasting consequences, for the mothers, children, wider families and subsequent generations.
The three One Adoption agencies welcome this apology and the recognition it gives to those who have spent many years sharing their experiences and calling for greater acknowledgement of the harm caused.
We recognise that today’s apology and the acknowledgement it represents will be significant for many people. For some, it may bring a sense of validation that their experiences have finally been recognised; for others, it may evoke difficult feelings, unanswered questions or a renewed reflection on the impact these events have had throughout their lives. Everyone's experience is unique, and people will respond to this moment in different ways.
